TAKE NINE
âNo way!â gasped Sophie as we headed down to get Tara for the weekly Movie Night that evening. âDid Monica know you could hear her?â
âNot sure,â I replied as we passed the Games Room where students were noisily engaged in an air soccer game. âBut she basically listed a whole load of things that Iâve apparently deliberately said and done to her. What about all the stuff sheâs said about me?â
âToo bad,â said Sophie. âAt least Marc was on your side?â
I smiled. âYeah, he was so sweet. But I still feel stressed out. I hope she wonât be at Movie Night tonight. Then again, I shouldnât have to avoid her.â
âNo, you shouldnât,â agreed Sophie. âDonât worry about her. She probably wonât be there anyway but even if she is â so what? Stand your ground.â
Easier said than done. My feet were reluctant to go any further.
âYou know what? Maybe I should give the movie a miss. I didnât even get time to call my parents, and Jaya was meant to call me...â I stopped walking.
âOh no, you donât!â stated Sophie, holding my arm tightly. âWe are going to watch this movie and take your mind off Monica!â
For someone so small and slight, Sophie could be quite forceful when she wanted to be. I gave in with a little nod and we dashed off, taking a shortcut through the pretty courtyard with its incredible Smart Garden, to the wing where Taraâs dorm was situated. Her room, on the second floor, overlooked the high-tech garden which featured gigantic flowers with petals created out of solar panels.
I tapped on the door. Tara appeared within seconds, holding up the latest copy of FilmGlitz.
âOh my goodness!â I shrieked. âYou got one?â
Apparently Tara had picked up a copy from the library. We ran into her room and pored over the article.
âItâs so stupid,â I concluded. âItâs basically a complete exaggeration. How do they know what Iâm saying behind closed doors anyway? Whoâs telling them?â
âIâm sure there are moles in the Academy,â said Tara darkly.
âWell, all the article says is that you think outsiders should be given more opportunities,â said Sophie, trying to rationalize it. âWhich you kind of said already on Dance Starz.â
I nodded.
âFilmGlitz has just jumped on this because of all the nepotism stuff going on right now and turned it into a âwar,ââ she said, using her fingers for quotation marks.
âI guess soâ¦â
âItâs settled then!â decided Tara, grabbing us both happily. âLetâs go and enjoy the film. Bollywood, here we come!â
The Observatory was a stunning glass dome attached to the back of the main building. There was fixed, curved seating on one side, and a stage plus pull-down screen on the other. It was always the space used when anybody important or famous came to visit, and students were only allowed to use it for events, like Movie Nights, or special occasions, like graduation ceremonies.
The building was magical during the day when sunlight filled the space and even more so at sunset when the sky was ablaze with different shades of red and pink.
